Acupuncture Defined
tea Acupuncture is the practice of inserting very fine, solid, sterilized needles into specific points on the body. The goal of acupuncture is to stimulate or disperse Qi (pronounced "chee". Qi, which translates directly as "vital force", is a subtle energy that circulates through the body via the meridians, in the same manner that blood flows in the vessels. The meridians connect to the head, arms, legs, feet, and torso.

The acupuncture needles are hair-thin and in no way resemble hypodermic needles. The needles are stainless steel, sealed in airtight single sterile packages, are used
only once, then discarded.

The principle benefit of Acupuncture
The abundance of vital energy (Qi) and the free flow of nutrient rich blood to the brain, limbs, and internal organs provide a clear mind and a healthy body. When an obstruction occurs in the flow of Qi and Blood, pain, discomfort, and illness happen. Acupuncture removes these obstructions, setting the body up to heal.

What happens at an Acupuncture treatment session?
The first session involves an in-depth conversation about your health concerns and your health history. Your acupuncturist asks you several questions related to your body and its behaviors. Often times a patient will present several issues that need addressing. Once your acupuncturist has all the pieces of your overall health picture, he or she will be able to put together a diagnosis and a treatment plan that will correct the imbalance.

tea The number of sessions a person needs usually depends on the amount of time the problem has existed, and the severity of the imbalance. Generally, between 6 and 10 sessions is the necessary amount. However many people feel results sooner than this. It is advisable to follow through with the recommended amount of sessions to prevent future injury or illness.

The treatment plan includes a specific set of acupuncture points (anywhere from 2 to 20, but most often 6-12, out of over 400 points) and an herbal prescription tailored to suit your specific concerns.

The patient lies either on face down, face up, or on one side, depending on many factors including patient comfort and the correct prescription of acupuncture points. Most often, points on the legs, arms, hands, feet, abdomen, upper and lower back, head, face or ears will be used. We will not stick a needle anywhere you absolutely do not want us to, so please speak up and tell us if you are uncomfortable being needled anywhere specific.

Once all the needles are in, you can relax on the table between 20 - 30 minutes, again depending on the factors of patient comfort and treatment plan. The first visit lasts 1-1.5 hours, and subsequent visits between 45 minutes to 1 hour. Please let us know if you need to be out of the office by a certain time and we will make sure you are.
